Muhammad Iqbal, aged 64, of Julianstown, County Meath, Ireland, was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment at Newcastle Crown Court on Friday, 14 August 2026, after being found guilty of two counts of sexual assault against female patients.

The court heard that the offences took place in late 2023 during medical assessments in Darlington and Sunderland. Both female victims had been referred for physiotherapy appointments arranged by their respective insurance companies following involvement in road traffic collisions.

During the first consultation, Iqbal grabbed the female patient’s breast without consent. In the second incident, Iqbal falsely claimed that a breast examination was clinically necessary to check for lumps, despite the assessment being solely focused on collision-related injuries. Both women reported the inappropriate conduct to the police after leaving the examinations.

Police officers arrested Iqbal, who denied all allegations during interviews. The case proceeded to a crown court trial, where a jury considered the testimony and evidence before returning guilty verdicts on two counts of sexual assault.

On 14 August 2026, the presiding judge sentenced Iqbal to a total custodial term of 18 months’ imprisonment. The court additionally ordered that Iqbal remain subject to the notification requirements of the sex offenders register for a period of ten years.
