In 2022, a Bolton man, Basil Alothman, was sentenced to 8 and a half years of imprisonment after being convicted of the serious sexual assault of a woman in a car. The incident occurred after the woman had spent the night out with friends.
After a nine-day trial at Manchester Crown Court, Basil Alothman (14/08/1978), of Waggon Road, Bolton, was judged guilty; the victim was unaware of his presence.
The jury was informed that the victim had been out on the evening of Friday, January 28, 2022, first for a family meal to celebrate a birthday and then with companions to Level Nightclub, located on Nelson Square in Bolton.
The woman, who is unable to be identified for legal reasons, stated in court that she had recollections of dancing with her companions and drinking alcohol before her memory disappeared. She did so behind the screen. She subsequently awoke in a car to discover that Alothman had committed a severe sexual assault by lying on top of her.
After confiding in a friend, she next remembered waking up at her mother’s home. Subsequently, the police were summoned, and an investigation was initiated.
Subsequently, the victim received numerous messages from an unknown phone number in the days that followed the attack, in which they expressed their regret. Subsequently, it was determined that the phone was registered to Alothman.
Alothman had been driving around the Bolton area between 2.30 am and 5.00 am in search of sexual activity, the judge noted in his summary of the case. Then, he identified a single female who was evidently intoxicated and exploited these vulnerabilities.
