In 2022, the Offender Register reported that Martin Butler assaulted the 16-year-old girl in an alleyway off Gosport High Street between 5 and 6 p.m. on November 19, 2021.
Butler, then 43, of Harbour Road in Gosport, made threats to return and reclaim the girl if she disclosed the incident to anyone, according to Portsmouth Crown Court. The girl refrained from reporting the incident to the police until March 2022 because she was concerned for her safety.
Butler was identified as the perpetrator after an investigation was initiated and extensive enquiries, including a public E-fit appeal, were conducted. Subsequently, he was apprehended and charged with assault by penetration and rape. The jury found him guilty of both counts on October 7, 2022, following his trial, which commenced on October 3, 2022.
Butler was sentenced to nine years in prison for rape, six years in prison to be served concurrently for assault by penetration, and an extended licence period of five years upon his appearance at the same court on December 2, 2022. In addition, Butler is required to sign the sex offenders register for the duration of his life and is subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
