A 20-year-old convicted child rapist has been sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment with an extended three-year licence period at Winchester Crown Court after terrorising a woman with a machete, causing her to fall to her death from a balcony during a desperate bid to escape.

Jaiden Hassan-Agard appeared for sentence following a trial where he was convicted of manslaughter in connection with the death of 25-year-old Tia Langdon at an address in Cuckmere Lane, Southampton, on 28 August 2025.

The prosecution detailed that the violence erupted when Hassan-Agard confronted Tia and a second woman inside the flat, accusing them of taking drugs belonging to him. Armed with a large machete, Hassan-Agard barricaded the occupants inside and embarked on a calculated campaign of armed intimidation. During the confrontation, he assaulted Tia, breaking her nose, and threatened both victims with the bladed weapon.

Driven by panic and having no safe avenue of retreat within the property, Tia attempted to scale the balcony to escape the violence, falling from height to the ground below. Prosecutors proved that Hassan-Agard’s violent aggression and armed threats were a direct catalyst for her desperate action.

Evidence presented to the court revealed that after Tia fell, Hassan-Agard made no effort to dial 999 or call emergency services, leaving her fatally injured on the ground. Instead, he maintained control over the second female victim inside the premises, subjecting her to further armed threats, unlawful detention, and kidnapping.

In addition to manslaughter, jurors returned guilty verdicts on charges of actual bodily harm, false imprisonment, making threats with an offensive weapon, and kidnap.

The court heard details regarding Hassan-Agard’s extensive record of serious criminality. At the age of 15, he was convicted of the rape of a 12-year-old girl, alongside concurrent convictions for actual bodily harm and grievous bodily harm. The defence submitted that Hassan-Agard had been exposed to drug networks from the age of 11 and had previously received an assessment identifying him as a victim of modern slavery.

Sentencing Hassan-Agard, Mrs Justice Tipples told him:
“You terrorised her so much that she saw no option but to try to escape you by going over the balcony.”

The judge found that Hassan-Agard became excited by the terror he caused and fed off the panic he created inside the flat. Concluding that he represented a dangerous offender presenting a high risk of serious harm to members of the public, Mrs Justice Tipples handed him an extended sentence of 21 years, comprising 18 years of immediate custody and three years on extended licence. He will be required to serve at least two-thirds of the 18-year custodial term before the Parole Board will consider his release.

Following the hearing, Tia Langdon’s family released a tribute describing her as a loving daughter and friend whose life was tragically cut short, expressing gratitude that her killer had been brought to justice while acknowledging that no custodial term could heal their loss.
