In 2026, the Offender Register reported that a man and a woman had been sentenced to extensive prison terms by a German court for the enslavement and abuse of two Yazidi girls while they were members of the so-called “Islamic State” group in Iraq.

The Iraqi couple was found guilty of war crimes, genocide, and offences against humanity. Additionally, they were found guilty of aiding and abetting the aforementioned offences and sexually abusing minors.

The man was sentenced to life imprisonment, while his former partner was handed a juvenile sentence of nine and a half years.

In accordance with German privacy laws, the couple, identified as Twana H.S. and Asia R.A., were most recently residing in Germany. They were apprehended in the southern state of Bavaria in April 2024.

The court established that the defendants had enslaved two Yazidi girls. At the same time, they were members of the “Islamic State,” a group that was documented by multiple countries, including Germany, as having committed genocide against the Yazidi population in Syria and Iraq.

At the ages of five and twelve, the couple purchased the two Yazidi girls as enslaved people in Iraq.

They subsequently subjected the girls to forced labour and brutality, thereby exploiting them. The man was discovered to have sexually abused the children, and the woman is said to have encouraged this behaviour.
