In 2026, the Offender Register confirmed that a British Transport Police (BTP) investigation had resulted in the imprisonment of Sebastian Vernon, a sex offender, who targeted lone women on late-night trains.
Sebastian Vernon, 45, of Finborough Road, West London, was convicted of two counts of Sexual Assault after a trial at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court.
The sex offender register was ordered to be signed for a period of seven years, and he was sentenced to six months in prison on July 1.
The court was informed that Vernon boarded a Circle Line train at Ladbrook Grove at approximately 11 p.m. on 25 March 2025, with the intention of travelling to King’s Cross station. He sat next to a young woman in the carriage, despite it being vacant, and sexually assaulted her while she was confined to her seat.
She attempted to evade Vernon’s grasp by feigning her departure from the train; however, she remained on board when she observed him disembark.
Vernon boarded a train from Stevenage to Hitchin just before midnight two weeks later, on 8 April.
He once more took a seat next to a young woman in a nearly empty carriage and engaged her in conversation.
The woman immediately became suspicious of his conduct and arose from her seat, proceeding toward the carriage doors.
Vernon sexually assaulted her as she awaited to exit the service, and she realised that he had followed her.
The women reported the incident through BTP’s discreet 61016 text-to-report service and its online reporting service. Officers quickly realised that they were searching for the same individual in connection with both attacks.
The officers were able to identify Vernon and trace him to a central London court, where he was arrested as he emerged from a hearing for unrelated offences of assault, theft, and possession of cannabis, as a result of their detailed reports.
