Following his conviction for aggressively shaking his kid, who was three and a half months old at the time, a father was sentenced to three years and three months of imprisonment today (Monday, June 22). The incident left his son with serious problems that will last for the rest of his life.

When Iskander Kechiche, 49, of Elkstone Close, Worcester, appeared before Worcester Crown Court on Monday, May 18, he entered a guilty plea to a section 20 assault GBH offence. Kechiche is shown here.

An investigation by the Public Protection Unit (PPU) of the West Mercia Police Department led to Kechiche’s conviction. The inquiry revealed that Kechiche had shaken the boy, who was three and a half months old at the time, in July 2021, when he was left alone with him. This action resulted in substantial head trauma, which led to life-altering damage.

Kechiche was sentenced to 39 months in jail today at Worcester Crown Court. The judge made this decision after taking into consideration his guilty plea and the fact that this was his first crime, for which the maximum term that could be imposed was five years.

When Kechiche called 999 on July 29, 2021, he said that his son had fallen from a sofa. However, the medical staff got suspicious and alerted the police that the boy was in cardiac arrest. Kechiche’s son was in the process of going into cardiac arrest.

Officers were present at the hospital, and two days later, Kechiche was taken into custody.

Although he continued to deny the allegations that he caused the injuries, the PPU investigation revealed that he was responsible.

They sought the opinions of a number of medical professionals, all of whom concurred that the injuries were the result of an abusive and non-accidental head injury. Therefore, the only plausible explanation for the source of the injuries was that Kechiche had shaken the youngster, which was an assault that left the infant with significant disabilities.

On June 28, 2024, Kechiche was charged with causing or allowing a child or vulnerable adult to suffer significant physical damage with the intent to cause such harm. When the defendant appeared in the Crown Court on Monday, May 18 of this year, this was later modified at the court to section 18 assault GBH. This occurred before a guilty plea for a section 20 GBH was accepted.

Currently, the five-year-old youngster is being cared for by his family as well as specialised medical, health, and support organisations.
