In 2024, the Offender Register reported that Selby Wardle died aged 72 at HMP Hull in Hedon Road.

He was first convicted for historic child sex offences on 26 March 2010, but three more victims came forward and, on 24 November 2022, he was sentenced to a further nine years in prison, Yorkshire Live reported at the time.

“This man has made my life hell and, even locked away, he still is,” said one of the victims in an impact statement heard at Bradford Crown Court. Judge Colin Burn said the effect of the abuse on the victims was “profound and appallingly destructive.

In a new report, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman found Wardle had died from natural causes and refused to go to all of his medical check-ups while imprisoned at HMP Hull. In the week before his death, a Healthcare Assistant found his blood pressure was raised.

Wardle had several medical conditions, including a heart defect he was born with and high blood pressure. Healthcare staff at Hull offered him annual reviews, which he declined to attend, the Ombudsman said.

He was found unresponsive on the floor of his cell at around 5 am on May 8 last year. The officer who found him radioed a medical emergency code, and nursing and prison staff began CPR.
