Christopher Malcolm, then aged 37, was sentenced to 16 years’ imprisonment at the High Court after being convicted of a campaign of rape, physical violence, and coercive control against four women across Lothian and Moray.
The criminal proceedings concluded an investigation by Police Scotland that spanned offences dating back to 2008, when Malcolm was a teenager.
The full scale of his offending was uncovered after family and friends of his former fiancée intervened through the Disclosure Scheme for Domestic Abuse.
The victim had met Malcolm on the dating application Tinder in August 2023, with the relationship rapidly escalating to cohabitation and an engagement by December.
Once established in the home, Malcolm enforced strict control over the victim’s life.
He demanded she delete her social media profiles, seized her mobile phone to block communication with her family, and repeatedly attended her place of employment to force her to leave early under threats of domestic retribution.
The abuse quickly turned into severe physical violence.
During one assault, Malcolm fractured the victim’s wrist and refused to allow her to attend hospital for medical treatment, resulting in permanent disfigurement that has left her unable to hold items in one hand.
On another occasion, Malcolm entered a three-day violent episode where he shredded furniture with a Stanley knife, threatened suicide, and repeatedly throttled the victim while pinned to the floor.
Malcolm carried out repeated rapes against the victim.
During one sexual assault, a child was present inside the property; following the attack, Malcolm forced the woman to sit on the floor in front of the child and apologise for causing distress.
Recognising the escalating danger, four relatives and friends independently contacted Police Scotland under the domestic abuse disclosure scheme, providing detectives with medical photographs of her injuries and abusive communications.
Officers arrested Malcolm in September 2024, exactly four weeks before the couple’s scheduled wedding ceremony.
Following a comprehensive High Court trial that featured testimony from 56 witnesses, the jury convicted Malcolm of multiple charges of rape, sexual assault, and domestic abuse involving four separate female victims.
In July, the presiding judge handed Malcolm an immediate custodial sentence of 16 years.
Malcolm has formally lodged an appeal against his 16-year custodial sentence.
