In this report from October 2022, Ryan Neale, aged 23, of no fixed address in Carlisle, Cumbria, was sentenced to seven years and seven months’ imprisonment (91 months) at Carlisle Crown Court after pleading guilty to rape.
The criminal investigation commenced in October 2021 after Cumbria Police received an emergency report from a woman detailing a serious sexual assault in Carlisle.
The court heard that Neale had issued a series of threatening remarks towards the victim prior to carrying out the rape.
Following the report, officers launched an active manhunt to locate and apprehend Neale.
Police units traced Neale to an address where they discovered him attempting to evade arrest by concealing himself inside the internal structural void of a sofa, hidden underneath the seat cushions.
Detectives condemned Neale’s conduct during the investigation, noting that he had lied continuously, attempted to evade capture, and failed to take accountability for his actions until entering a late guilty plea.
Appearing before Carlisle Crown Court on 28 October 2022, Neale pleaded guilty to:

The presiding judge handed Neale a total custodial sentence of 91 months’ imprisonment, alongside an indefinite restraining order and lifetime registration on the Sex Offenders Register.
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation applicable in October 2022 for serious sexual offences, Neale is required to serve two-thirds (60.6 months) of his 91-month sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible for statutory release on licence. His projected release date is November 2027, whereupon he will remain subject to licence supervision in the community until his full sentence expires in May 2030.
