In this report from October 2022, Mirel Stefan, aged 28, of Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday, 26 October 2022, after being convicted of rape and coercive control.
The criminal investigation commenced after a vulnerable woman managed to escape from a property in Mansfield where she had been held captive during the spring and summer of 2020.
The court heard that Stefan carried out a sadistic campaign of physical violence, emotional degradation, and sexual abuse against the victim.
Stefan trapped the woman inside the residence, locked the doors to prevent her leaving, and exercised total control over her personal finances while subjecting her to repeated physical beatings.
During the prolonged period of captivity, Stefan subjected the victim to rape and severe humiliation.
Nottinghamshire Police arrested Stefan following the victim’s escape, with detectives highlighting that he was one of the most violent offenders the force had ever investigated.
Following a Crown Court trial, Stefan was convicted of:
- One count of rape
- One count of controlling and coercive behaviour
The presiding judge handed Stefan a total custodial sentence of 10 years (120 months), with a requirement that he serve at least part of the sentence at a secure hospital facility under mental health provisions.
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation applicable in October 2022 for serious sexual offences carrying sentences of seven years or more, Stefan is required to serve two-thirds (80 months / 6 years and 8 months) of his 10-year sentence in secure custody or hospital detention before becoming eligible for statutory release on licence. His projected release date is June 2029, whereupon he will remain subject to licence conditions and supervision in the community until the expiration of the full 10-year term in October 2032.
