In this report from October 2022, Richard Weaver, aged 45, of Newham, East London, was sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment at Snaresbrook Crown Court on 28 October 2022 after being convicted of rape, stabbing, and falsely imprisoning his ex-partner.
The criminal investigation commenced after the Metropolitan Police responded to emergency calls from a woman who had fled a domestic residence in Newham on 3 October 2019.
The court heard that the victim returned home from work shortly after the couple had agreed to end their relationship.
Weaver confronted the victim, following her up the stairs while shouting verbal abuse before launching a violent physical assault.
During the attack, Weaver struck the victim in the head and stabbed her in the hand, causing serious lacerations.
Weaver then prevented the victim from leaving the property, holding her captive and subjecting her to rape.
The victim reported that she was left fearing for her life throughout the duration of the assault.
When Weaver momentarily stated that she could leave to seek medical attention for her severe stab wound before attempting to retract the offer, the victim managed to break free from the premises and ran into a neighbouring street to contact law enforcement.
Following a trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court, Weaver was convicted of:
- One count of rape
- One count of making threats to kill
- One count of false imprisonment
- One count of unlawful wounding
- One count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH)
The presiding judge handed Weaver a total custodial sentence of 13 years’ imprisonment (156 months).
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation applicable in October 2022 for serious violent and sexual offences, Weaver is required to serve two-thirds (104 months / 8 years and 8 months) of his 13-year term in prison custody before becoming eligible for statutory release on licence. His projected release date is June 2031, following which he will remain subject to strict licence supervision in the community until the expiration of the full 13-year sentence in October 2035.
