Martyn Boyns, then aged 41, of Cornwall, was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment at Truro Crown Court after pleading guilty to unlawful wounding following a violent domestic knife attack on his partner.
The court heard that the assault occurred at approximately 3.30am inside the kitchen of their shared residence following a verbal altercation.
Boyns snapped and punched his partner in the face before stamping on her head while she was lying on the kitchen floor.
When the victim stood up to him and told him she was not afraid, Boyns seized a knife and slashed her neck twice.
The victim collapsed to the floor bleeding heavily from wounds situated directly above her windpipe. Boyns then subjected her to further violence, repeatedly stamping on her wounded neck.
In an act described as callous cruelty, Boyns also forcibly ripped off her diabetes sensor while she lay incapacitated, suffering from double vision and severe lacerations.
Emergency services transported the victim to hospital, where doctors administered stitches to treat an 8cm slash wound and a 4cm laceration positioned directly over her windpipe.
The court was told that Boyns had an extensive criminal record comprising 25 previous convictions for 67 offences, including convictions for battery, threats to kill, and assaulting emergency workers.
The defence cited a chaotic childhood and longstanding substance abuse issues in mitigation.
Judge Simon Carr described the incident as an extreme case of domestic violence that could easily have had fatal consequences. Boyns entered a guilty plea to unlawful wounding and was sentenced to an 18-month custodial term.
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing standard determinate sentences for non-sexual violent offences, Boyns is required to serve one-half (9 months) of his 18-month sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible for automatic statutory release on licence. Upon completing his custodial term, he will serve the remaining nine months under the supervision of the Probation Service in the community.
