In 2026, a 26-year-old former secondary school teacher received a suspended custodial sentence at Grimsby Crown Court after abusing his position of trust to send sexualised messages to a student.
Jamie Duguid, residing in Whitley Bay, Northumbria, appeared in the dock for sentence on Friday 30 October 2026. Duguid had previously entered a guilty plea in November of the preceding year to engaging in sexual communication with a child. He denied a separate allegation of sexual assault, of which he was formally acquitted by a jury following a five-day trial.
The investigation commenced in 2023 when reports were submitted to law enforcement highlighting concerns that a teacher was misusing his professional status at a secondary school based in Hull. Specialist safeguarding officers established that Duguid had initiated contact with the pupil across social networks, engaging in sexualised communication.
Forensic inquiries revealed that Duguid took steps to obscure his identity on Snapchat while maintaining contact with the student, despite having blocked the pupil on Facebook and Messenger. Furthermore, detectives discovered that Duguid had purchased a series of items online and arranged for them to be delivered to a secure postal locker for the student to access. The items were never collected.
Following his initial arrest, Duguid was interviewed by detectives and replied “no comment” to every question regarding his conduct and inappropriate engagement with the pupil. He was subsequently re-interviewed regarding the online purchases, his selective blocking of accounts, his efforts to disguise his digital profile, and his search history, continuing to answer “no comment” throughout.
At Grimsby Crown Court, the presiding judge imposed a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for an operational period.
As part of the sentence, Duguid was ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid community work, placed on the statutory Sex Offenders Register for a duration of 10 years, and made subject to a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) regulating his access to digital devices and contact with children.
