A 38-year-old man from Gateshead with a history of extreme violence has received an extended prison sentence of more than ten years after carrying out a sustained assault on two women during birthday celebrations.
Gary Burton appeared at Newcastle Crown Court for sentence after pleading guilty to attempted intentional wounding and assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH).
The prosecution detailed that on 3 March 2026, Burton invited his then-partner and his former girlfriend to his Gateshead flat to celebrate his 38th birthday. During the early hours of the morning, following the consumption of alcohol and illicit substances, a dispute arose involving allegations of infidelity and remarks directed at Burton’s family.
At approximately 03:00 BST, the conflict escalated into gratuitous physical violence inside the communal foyer of the apartment building. The attack, which was captured on building CCTV cameras, showed Burton repeatedly knocking both women to the ground.
Whenever either victim attempted to defend herself or escape into the street, Burton responded with significant force. He rained dozens of blows upon them, later admitting to the Probation Service that he threw approximately 50 punches and 30 kicks, which included multiple deliberate stamps to the head of one of the victims.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, where arriving police officers encountered one woman outside the building covered in blood and screaming in severe distress. Officers located the second victim nearby in a semi-conscious state, having sustained extensive facial swelling and trauma.
When questioned by police, Burton admitted that he had lost control during the confrontation, expressing regret and stating that he cared for both victims.
The court heard that Burton had accumulated 38 prior convictions on his criminal record, demonstrating an entrenched history of violence and domestic abuse. Notably, in 2019, he was sentenced to six-and-a-half years’ imprisonment for inflicting grievous bodily harm after he attacked a male friend with a meat cleaver while intoxicated, leaving the victim with a severe wound that penetrated to the muscle.
Passing sentence, Judge Robert Spragg described the assault as brutal, vicious, and sustained, highlighting the severe risk Burton presented when under the influence of drink and drugs. Formally designating Burton a dangerous offender under statutory sentencing guidelines, the judge imposed an extended determinate sentence comprising six years and nine months’ immediate imprisonment followed by an extended licence period of four years.
Under the terms of the sentence, Burton will not be eligible for release until he has served at least two-thirds of the custodial element, with release subject to direct approval by the Parole Board and strict community licence conditions.
Burton stood convicted of:
Attempted intentional wounding
Assault occasioning actual bodily harm
Sentencing outcome and statutory measures:
Extended determinate sentence of ten years and nine months (six years and nine months in custody; four years on extended licence)
Restraining orders protecting both victims
Statutory victim surcharge
Dangerous offender post-custodial licence supervision conditions enforceable upon release from prison
