Callum Harpur, aged 20, of Western Street, Bedford, has been sentenced to three years in prison after being caught with more than 16,000 indecent images of children while actively serving a suspended sentence for identical criminality.

The court heard that Bedfordshire Police executed a planned search warrant at Harpur’s residential address in July. Upon entering the property, officers discovered and seized 14 electronic devices. Harpur, who was subject to offender management supervision under a previous suspended sentence, had only declared two of these devices to his Supervising Officer, intentionally concealing the remaining digital hardware to evade law enforcement monitoring.

Detectives from Bedfordshire Police’s Internet Child Abuse Investigation Team (ICAIT) subjected the seized hardware to rigorous digital forensic examination. The technical analysis revealed that Harpur was not only downloading and storing thousands of illicit files, but was also actively taking new indecent images of children, producing additional materials, and distributing the prohibited media to other users via the encrypted messaging platform Telegram.

Following his arrest, Harpur was taken into custody where he gave a ‘no comment’ interview to investigating officers. Despite his refusal to cooperate during police questioning, ICAIT officers assembled an overwhelming digital evidence package, leading to formal charges and his immediate remand into custody.

Appearing at court on 24 October, Harpur entered formal guilty pleas to four counts of making indecent images of children, taking indecent images of children, and distributing indecent images of children. He further admitted to a charge of breaching his active Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).

The presiding judge sentenced Harpur to three years’ imprisonment for the series of offences. In addition to his custodial term, the court ordered that Harpur be placed on the sex offenders register for life to safeguard the public. Police representatives emphasized that advanced technological investments and dedicated offender management units remain crucial in identifying cyber criminals and removing dangerous offenders from local communities.
