Richard Barrett, of South Essex, was sentenced to three years and two months’ imprisonment on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, after being convicted of seven offences relating to the making and distribution of indecent images of children and the possession of extreme pornography.
The sentence was handed down by Judge Richard Conley at Colchester Magistrates’ Court, sitting as a satellite court for Basildon Crown Court. The court heard that following his arrest, Barrett repeatedly laughed and joked while police officers took his custody photograph.
Barrett was subsequently released on bail but went on to breach his bail conditions on four separate occasions during 2025, failing to appear for scheduled crown court hearings on 12 May, 29 May, 16 June, and 3 November.
Forensic examination of electronic equipment seized from Barrett revealed a substantial collection of child sexual abuse material, including:
- 49 Category A videos and 56 Category A images (involving penetrative or sadistic abuse of children)
- 9 Category B videos and 52 Category B images
- 8 Category C videos and 75 Category C images
- 1 extreme pornographic image depicting an act of bestiality
The court heard evidence that Barrett actively distributed the material, transmitting seven Category A videos, one Category B video, and one Category C video.
Appearing for sentence, Barrett was convicted of:
- Three counts of making indecent images of children
- Three counts of distributing indecent images of children
- One count of possessing an extreme pornographic image
Judge Conley sentenced Barrett to a total custodial sentence of three years and two months and ordered the forfeiture and destruction of all seized electronic devices. Barrett was made subject to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) requiring him to register all electronic equipment with police and make it available for inspection without notice, barred from working with children or vulnerable adults, and ordered to register as a sex offender.
