Alex Trusler, then aged 36, of Burntwood, Staffordshire, was sentenced at Northampton Crown Court after entering guilty pleas to four counts of sexual assault.
The prosecution concluded an inquiry conducted by Staffordshire Police’s Anti-Corruption Unit into incidents that took place during 2023.
The court heard that Trusler had been employed as an active response officer based in Cannock.
In September 2023, allegations of sexual offending were formally reported to the force, prompting senior officers to suspend Trusler from all operational duties with immediate effect.
Trusler formally tendered his resignation from Staffordshire Police on 1 September.
At a preceding plea hearing at Northampton Crown Court on 10 July, Trusler admitted four counts of sexual assault.
On Thursday, 3 September, a force special gross misconduct hearing examined the allegations and found that Trusler had breached the police standards of professional behaviour concerning respect, courtesy, and discreditable conduct.
The hearing concluded that the breaches amounted to gross misconduct and that Trusler would have been summarily dismissed without notice had he remained an active officer.
Trusler was consequently placed on the College of Policing’s national Barred List, which legally prevents him from ever working in policing, special constabularies, or partner law enforcement institutions.
Deputy Chief Constable Caroline Marsh stated that Trusler’s criminal actions represented a severe breach of public trust that fell far below the professional and ethical standards expected of officers, praising the victims for their resilience in coming forward.
On Tuesday, 8 September, the presiding judge sentenced Trusler to 42 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for a period of 18 months.
In addition, the court ordered that Trusler be placed on the Sex Offenders Register, requiring him to comply with statutory police notification requirements for a period of ten years.
