Phill Blunt, then aged 39, of Scarborough, North Yorkshire, was sentenced to eight and a half years’ imprisonment at York Crown Court on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, after entering a late guilty plea to rape.
The conviction concluded a protracted investigation led by North Yorkshire Police’s Scarborough and Ryedale Safeguarding Investigation Team into an assault committed at an address in the local area more than two years ago.
The court heard that Blunt had initially maintained a plea of not guilty, with a Crown Court trial listed to commence in July 2026.
The victim was actively preparing to attend court and provide testimony regarding the attack when Blunt altered his position at the last moment, abandoning his defence and pleading guilty to the indictment.
In her victim personal statement submitted to the court, the survivor described the immense emotional toll of the process, stating that reporting Blunt to the police was one of the hardest actions she had ever taken, but remained the best decision she could have made.
Detective Constable Jack McCabe praised the survivor’s exceptional courage and fortitude across the multi-year inquiry, expressing relief that Blunt’s last-minute admission had spared her the additional trauma of reliving the assault before a jury.
The presiding judge handed Blunt an immediate custodial sentence of eight years and six months (102 months).
In addition to the prison term, the court issued a restraining order prohibiting Blunt from contacting the victim and directed that he be placed on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely for life.
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing serious sexual offences that carry determinate sentences of seven years or more, Blunt is required to serve at least two-thirds (68 months / five years and eight months) of his 102-month sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible to apply to the Parole Board for early release on licence. Release is not automatic, and if approved, Blunt will remain subject to licence conditions and strict probation supervision in the community until his full term concludes.
