Shibin Vimala Santhakumar, aged 45, formerly of Pipers Hill Road, Kettering, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison at Northampton Crown Court after being convicted of nine child exploitation charges, including sexual activity with a child, inciting sexual activity with a child, and possessing indecent images.

The court heard that Santhakumar exploited his position as a shop worker at a commercial premises on Windmill Avenue in Kettering to target a 14-year-old girl in September 2020. Santhakumar engaged in a calculated process of grooming, offering the child free sweets, fizzy drinks, and extra monetary change during her visits to the store. This gradual building of rapport was intentionally designed to gain her trust and lower her boundaries.

Once Santhakumar established a degree of influence, his predatory conduct escalated into explicit sexual abuse, which took place both inside the commercial shop premises and subsequently at his residential address. The victim reported the abuse to Northamptonshire Police in November 2020, prompting an immediate investigation by the force’s specialized child protection team.

Detectives executed evidence gathering procedures at the retail shop, seizing the physical hard drive from the store’s CCTV security system. Upon forensic analysis, officers discovered video recordings that directly captured Santhakumar committing sexual offences against the child within the store.

Although Santhakumar entered guilty pleas to certain aspects of the indictment, he consistently maintained his innocence regarding the abuse that occurred at his home address. His refusal to accept full responsibility forced the case to proceed to a crown court trial. Following trial proceedings, a jury found Santhakumar guilty on all nine counts.

Detective Constable Chris Waterfall of the Northamptonshire Police child protection team commended the victim’s courage in coming forward and supporting the investigation, emphasizing that child grooming often begins with subtle boundary testing through gifts and favors before escalating into severe physical harm.

The presiding judge sentenced Santhakumar to 11 years’ imprisonment, removing a dangerous offender from the public domain. All trial metrics, conviction details, and custodial data for Shibin Vimala Santhakumar are formally catalogued on the UK Register Database for public record transparency.
