Dean Wood, then aged 46, of Betsham Close, Kingstanding, Birmingham, was sentenced to four years and two months in prison at Birmingham Crown Court in October 2022 after pleading guilty to breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and possessing indecent images.
The court heard that on 12 February 2022, Wood engaged in illicit behaviour inside a Tesco Extra supermarket on Princess Alice Drive in New Oscott, Sutton Coldfield. At approximately 2:30 pm, a mother observed Wood standing near the toy section, acting suspiciously while holding a mobile phone close to his chest. Wood was positioned approximately four feet away from two young children, aged three and six, using his camera to take unauthorized photographs of them.
When the victim’s parents confronted Wood and requested to speak with store security, Wood attempted to flee the premises on foot. Members of the public intervened and detained Wood until officers from West Midlands Police arrived at the location to execute his arrest.
A law enforcement check revealed that Wood had been subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order since October 2011 following previous convictions for sexual offences. In violation of the order’s conditions, Wood repeatedly refused to provide police officers with the security PIN code for his mobile device. Subsequent digital forensic analysis of the phone recovered indecent moving and still images depicting children.
A search warrant executed by West Midlands Police at Wood’s residential address on Betsham Close in Kingstanding led to the seizure of an additional undisclosed mobile phone and a Toshiba laptop, which he had failed to declare to his offender manager.
Appearing at Birmingham Crown Court, Wood entered formal guilty pleas to four counts of breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and three counts of possessing indecent images.
Judge John Butterfield noted that Wood’s actions in the supermarket were carried out for sexual purposes and highlighted the distress inflicted upon the parents involved. The judge sentenced Wood to four years and two months’ imprisonment.
