In 2021, Brian Greenslade, aged 72, of Marwood, Barnstaple, was sentenced at Exeter Crown Court to 16 months in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting three women.
The court heard details regarding offences dating back to the 1990s and mid-2000s, committed while Greenslade served as leader of Devon County Council and worked as an accountant. Prosecutors outlined how Greenslade abused his public status, authority, and professional standing to target female victims.
During the first incident, Greenslade was alone with a woman on council business when he lunged at her, grabbed both her arms, attempted to kiss her, and put his hand down the front of her trousers while she attempted to push him away.
The second victim was assaulted during a function at County Hall, where Greenslade put his arm around her and fondled her breast.
The third incident occurred in the 1990s inside an office setting, where Greenslade stood behind a female colleague and reached over to grab her breast.
The three survivors came forward to report the offences to Devon and Cornwall Police in 2018 following a public censure issued by the council regarding his conduct toward staff.
Throughout the trial, Greenslade denied all charges, suggesting the claims were politically motivated.
However, the jury rejected his defence, agreeing with prosecutors that he was driven by ego and self-importance.
