In 2026, Lewis Ballington, a 25-year-old man from Powys, was jailed for 22 months after strangling his former partner during a violent domestic incident.
Lewis Ballington, of Min Y Rhos, Ystradgynlais, was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court on Monday, 27 July 2026, after pleading guilty to intentional strangulation. The court heard that on 5 January 2025, an argument escalated at their home in Ystradgynlais when the victim turned off Ballington’s video game console. Ballington made threats to harm her pets before lunging at her, grabbing her by the throat, and restricting her breathing. The victim expressed in court that she genuinely feared for her life during the attack.
The court heard that the offence placed Ballington in breach of a 10-month suspended prison sentence imposed in February 2023 for wounding and theft. Defence counsel noted Ballington suffered from mental health issues and possessed a difficult personal background. Still, Judge Huw Rees emphasised the gravity of domestic violence and deemed him a risk to future partners. The judge sentenced Ballington to 18 months for the strangulation charge and activated four months of his previous suspended sentence to run consecutively, totalling 22 months in custody.
In addition to his 22-month custodial sentence, Ballington was made subject to a 10-year restraining order.
This order strictly prohibits him from contacting his former partner to ensure long-term legal protection and statutory public safety measures upon his eventual release from prison.
