Women’s Street Watch Newcastle was established by a volunteer named Charlie following the murders of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa in 2021. Operating from a marquee and a dedicated support vehicle in the Bigg Market, the group provides emergency assistance, first aid, and safe transport for women during night-time economies. Charlie reported that volunteers regularly face unprovoked verbal harassment, intimidation, and catcalling from groups of men while carrying out welfare work.
Highlighting incidents from a single shift, Charlie detailed how an aggressive individual attempted to damage the team’s marquee and then stepped up to intimidate volunteers. Later that night, while departing in her vehicle after assisting injured members of the public, an unknown man targeted her with hostile verbal abuse outside her car window to elicit reactions from his peers. Charlie emphasised that such behaviour is driven by attempts to establish social status among male peers, calling on men to actively challenge and call out misogynistic behaviour within their social groups.
