In 2019, the Offender Database reported that Paul Burchill, then 65, of Tickenham Road, Clevedon, Somerset, was sentenced to 13 years in prison at Bristol Crown Court. Burchill, who worked as a chicken coop cleaner, confessed his vile and predatory behaviour to officers, stating: “I was an animal, I’m guilty as hell.” The court heard that Paul Burchill subjected two children to multiple horrific sexual assaults and was further convicted of the violent rape of a young woman.

The prosecution, led by Mark Worsley, detailed the horrendous impact on the first victim, who was aged under 15 at the time of the sickening abuse. When the girl initially tried to complain about the vile treatment, Burchill displayed a deplorable lack of empathy, calling her a “miserable s**g.” The victim has since suffered from profound psychological trauma, including night terrors and a complete inability to trust others, following the violent breach of her safety in Clevedon, Somerset.

Paul Burchill admitted to five indecent assault charges relating to a second child under the age of 13, whom he forced to perform sickening sex acts. A victim impact statement from this second child described the experience as “horrible and disgusting.” The court also heard that a previous attempt to prosecute Burchill for the rape of a young woman had not initially proceeded, but the case was successfully reopened following these later reports. Judge James Patrick remarked on the serious and depraved nature of the offending when handing down the lengthy custodial term.

As a result of his convictions for rape, attempted rape, and multiple indecent assaults, Paul Burchill was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life. He is indefinitely barred from working with children or vulnerable adults. Burchill is managed under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) by Avon and Somerset Police, remaining under intensive supervision for the duration of his life. Any attempt to contact his victims or any breach of his strict registration requirements in Clevedon or elsewhere will result in his immediate arrest and return to prison.
