In 2021, Walton Cliffe, a then-69-year-old music teacher from Rugby, was handed a 20-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to distributing, making, and possessing thousands of indecent images of children over 15 years.
Walton Cliffe, of Elsee Road, Rugby, appeared at Warwick Crown Court, where he admitted three counts of distributing indecent images of children, three of making indecent images, three of possessing indecent images, one count of possessing a prohibited image, two counts of possessing extreme pornography, and two counts of publishing an obscene article. The court heard that Warwickshire Police officers raided Cliffe’s address in July 2020 following intelligence about online uploads. Officers seized printed photos, digital devices containing 1,502 child abuse images (83 at Category A), and 190 pages of chat messages where Cliffe discussed engaging in sex acts with a named local 14-year-old girl.
Recorder John Steel QC sentenced Cliffe to 20 months in prison, suspended for two years, alongside a 50-day curfew, rehabilitation activity requirements, and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) restricting unsupervised access to children.
Following his convictions for child sexual abuse material, Cliffe was ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years.
He also remains subject to statutory public protection notification requirements and long-term risk management by law enforcement.
