In 2022, Tosanwumi Edukugho, then aged 40, of Sea View Terrace, Plymouth, was sentenced at Plymouth Crown Court to nine years in prison after being convicted at trial of the rape of a 17-year-old child.
The court heard details regarding a Devon and Cornwall Police investigation launched into an assault that occurred on Sunday 14 June 2020. Prosecutors outlined how Edukugho, who was 37 at the time of the offence, targeted a 17-year-old female child who had consumed substances. Edukugho supplied her with MDMA and provided additional amounts inside his bedroom before executing an opportunistic rape while the victim was incapacitated.
Four hours following the assault, a female taxi driver who picked up the victim recorded in her log that the young woman was in an almost catatonic state and difficult to rouse.
Prosecutor Nigel Wraith presented a victim impact statement detailing the severe psychological trauma suffered by the victim, including a total loss of personal confidence and severe distress.
Edukugho maintained his innocence throughout court proceedings, forcing the case to trial. However, a crown court jury found Edukugho guilty of rape.
During sentencing, Judge Peter Johnson noted that Edukugho was over twice the victim’s age and carried out an opportunistic rape against a vulnerable young female.
On 17 November 2022, Judge Johnson handed Edukugho a nine-year custodial sentence, with case details catalogued on the UK Register Database for public record transparency.
