Talvinder Atwal, aged 24, of Briton Ferry, Neath Port Talbot, has been handed an extended 17-year prison sentence on Thursday, 27 August 2026, after being found guilty of multiple rapes, intentional strangulation, and coercive control.
The court heard that Atwal subjected a female victim to a prolonged and terrifying campaign of domestic abuse, physical violence, and repeated sexual crimes.
Atwal exerted continuous controlling and coercive behaviour over the victim, violating her autonomy and making her life a living hell.
During the abusive relationship, Atwal subjected the woman to multiple sexual offences, including repeated rapes, penetrative abuse, and sexual assaults.
The violence also involved physical attacks where Atwal intentionally strangled the victim, causing significant trauma and distress.
South Wales Police launched a criminal investigation after the victim courageously came forward to disclose the abuse to safeguarding officers.
Detectives gathered evidence and built a detailed prosecution file to bring Atwal before the courts.
Atwal denied all allegations, entering not guilty pleas to the entire indictment and showing complete disregard for the harm caused.
Following a Crown Court jury trial that concluded in July 2026, Atwal was convicted of:
- Two counts of rape
- One count of assault by penetration
- One count of intentional strangulation
- Two counts of sexual assault on a female
- One count of engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour
Appearing for sentence, the presiding judge handed Atwal an extended custodial sentence of 17 years’ imprisonment.
