Sohaib Ahmadzai, then aged 22, was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment (48 months) on Thursday, 9 July 2026, after being convicted of raping and sexually assaulting a woman in Edinburgh.
The conviction follows a comprehensive inquiry led by Police Scotland into an attack that occurred on 23 May 2024 within a residential property in the Abbeyhill area of the capital.
The court heard that Ahmadzai targeted the victim while she was asleep, subjecting her to an abhorrent ordeal involving rape and sexual assault.
Following the assault, the victim contacted police and supported detectives throughout the investigation and subsequent court proceedings.
Ahmadzai was convicted of:
- One count of rape
- One count of sexual assault
Acting Detective Inspector Peter Gilzean commended the survivor, stating that Ahmadzai subjected his victim to a horrific ordeal and would now face the consequences of his abhorrent actions, while reaffirming that Police Scotland investigates all sexual offending rigorously.
The presiding judge handed down a custodial sentence of four years’ imprisonment.
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing sexual offences, Ahmadzai is required to serve two-thirds (32 months / 2 years and 8 months) of his 48-month sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible for automatic statutory release on licence. His projected release date falls in March 2029, whereupon he will remain subject to licence supervision in the community until the expiration of the full term in July 2030.
