Syed Imam, then aged 30, of Croydon Road, Beddington, was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment (72 months) at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Thursday, 3 September 2026, after being found guilty of attempted rape.
The conviction follows an incident in the early morning of Friday, 14 March 2025, in an underpass near the railway station at Canary Wharf.
The court heard that on-patrol security officers noticed Imam acting suspiciously before witnessing him forcibly assaulting a vulnerable woman.
The security team intervened, prevented Imam from fleeing, and alerted the Metropolitan Police, enabling officers to arrest him within 30 minutes of the attack.
Despite the victim having no memory of the assault, detectives reviewed extensive CCTV coverage tracing Imam’s movements, allowing the Crown Prosecution Service to authorise charges within 24 hours of his arrest.
Following a four-day trial, the jury returned a guilty verdict on 2 July 2026 for:
- One count of attempted rape
Detective Constable Madeleine Powell stated that the intervention of the security staff was vital in protecting the victim from further harm and bringing a violent offender to justice.
The presiding judge handed down a custodial term of six years’ imprisonment.
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing sexual offences, Imam is required to serve two-thirds (48 months / 4 years) of his 72-month sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible for statutory release on licence. His projected release date falls in September 2030, whereupon he will remain subject to licence conditions and statutory community supervision until the expiration of the full term in September 2032.
