An incident occurred involving a Qatar Airways Airbus A330 (Flight QR23 from Doha to Manchester) and two Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon fighter jets.
The intercept was triggered when the commercial airliner entered United Kingdom airspace. Air traffic controllers lost standard two-way radio communication with the cockpit after a passenger handed the flight crew a note claiming there was a bomb on board. Under standard national air defence protocols, an uncommunicative commercial aircraft or an onboard security threat in UK airspace triggers an immediate Quick Reaction Alert (QRA).
Two Eurofighter Typhoons were scrambled from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire to intercept the airliner. The fighter jets escorted the plane over northern England while air traffic control and emergency services managed the situation on the ground.
Upon intercepting the aircraft, the Typhoons escorted Flight QR23 directly to Manchester Airport, where it made a safe landing. Armed police boarded the plane immediately upon arrival and detained a 47-year-old passenger under the Mental Health Act. Authorities confirmed that standard safety procedures were followed throughout, and no explosives were found on board.
