In 2021, a predatory paedophile who harassed a 12-year-old girl to send him intimate images of herself was incarcerated after her mother, who became a detective, compelled a Leicestershire Police investigation.

The police initially declined to intervene, but they were ultimately compelled to do so as a result of the growing body of evidence demonstrating the 40-year-old offender’s progressively perilous and shocking conduct.

On Friday, June 25, the Gloucester Crown Court sentenced Oliver Anthony, of Egdon Crescent in Cheltenham, to three years in prison.

The sentencing hearing was informed that the girl’s mother assumed control of the conversation in an attempt to ascertain Anthony’s identity after discovering communications between her daughter and Anthony.

Anthony entered a plea of guilty to the charges of attempting to incite a 12-year-old girl to engage in sexual activity that involved the penetration of her vagina between June 26 and July 10, 2020, and to communicate with the girl sexually for the purpose of obtaining sexual gratification between the same dates.

Judge Ian Lawrie QC stated to Anthony, “This offence is so severe that only a custodial sentence can be deemed appropriate. The minimum sentence I can impose in light of the gravity of the offence is three years.”

Anthony was sentenced by the judge to sign the sex offenders’ register for a period of time and to be subjected to the terms of the Sexual Harm Prevention Order for life.
