A 20-year-old Lancashire man has received an immediate custodial sentence of 10 years and 10 months at Burnley Crown Court after being convicted of rape, sexual assault by penetration, and multiple violent strangulation attacks against a vulnerable young woman.
Zain Hussain, formerly from Darwen and now of no fixed address, appeared in the dock for sentencing on Tuesday 3 November 2026 following a contested trial at Preston Crown Court in August.
The criminal proceedings commenced in November 2025 when the complainant attended Greenbank Police Station in Blackburn to report that Hussain had subjected her to physical assault. Lancashire Police officers arrested Hussain the following day, securing initial assault charges before the court remanded him in custody.
While Hussain was held on remand, the survivor made further disclosures to investigators, revealing that Hussain had subjected her to a sustained campaign of sexual violence, physical assaults, and choking. In January 2026, detectives attached to the force’s specialist Rape and Serious Sexual Offences team attended HMP Altcourse to interview Hussain under caution regarding the allegations. On the same day, the Crown Prosecution Service authorised an indictment containing additional sexual and violent offences.
At his trial at Preston Crown Court in August 2026, Hussain maintained his denials, forcing the victim to provide evidence from the witness stand. The court heard that the severe psychological trauma of reliving the abuse caused the survivor to faint and vomit in the witness box during proceedings.
Jurors rejected Hussain’s defence and found him guilty of:
One count of rape
One count of sexual assault by penetration
Two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm (ABH)
Two counts of non-fatal strangulation
Under the provisions of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 1992, the survivor is protected by mandatory, lifelong statutory anonymity. Any publication, broadcast, or public dissemination of information capable of leading to her identification is strictly prohibited under UK law.
Sentencing Hussain at Burnley Crown Court, the presiding judge ordered him to serve an immediate prison term of 10 years and 10 months.
The court also imposed an indefinite restraining order preventing Hussain from contacting the victim directly or indirectly for the remainder of his life, and made him subject to statutory notification requirements on the Sex Offenders Register.
