In 2021, Nicholas Mucklin, a then 46-year-old man from Peterborough, was jailed following an online grooming operation conducted by a child protection group.
Nicholas Mucklin, of Orchard Mews, Peterborough, was sentenced at Peterborough Crown Court to two years and eight months in prison after pleading guilty to attempting to arrange the commission of a child sex offence and attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child. The court heard that Mucklin transmitted hundreds of messages to a digital account he believed belonged to a 12-year-old girl. In reality, the profile was a decoy operated by an Online Child Abuse Activist Group (OCAG).
Between February and April, Mucklin sent explicit communications, requested indecent photographs, and eventually arranged to meet the fictitious child outside Peterborough Train Station on 4 April. Upon arriving at the location with a bag of chocolates, he was confronted by members of the group, who contacted Cambridgeshire Constabulary. Detectives reviewed 562 pages of chat logs provided by the group to secure his conviction.
In addition to his custodial sentence, Mucklin was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
He was also made subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) to ensure strict ongoing monitoring of his digital communications and public safety risks following his eventual release.
