Michael Davies, then aged 57, of Cefn Road, Bridgend, has been found guilty of murder at Crown Court following the strangulation of his wife, Tracey Davies, inside their home in South Wales.
The conviction concludes an investigation led by South Wales Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team into the killing, which took place on 18 April 2025.
Emergency services were dispatched to the couple’s property on Bryn Terrace in Cefn Cribwr at approximately 9.20 pm.
A family member had entered the address to conduct a welfare check after failing to make contact with either party for more than 24 hours.
Upon searching the upstairs of the property, the relative discovered Tracey Davies deceased on the bedroom floor.
Michael Davies was found lying unconscious in the same room, having sustained self-inflicted stab wounds alongside an overdose of medication.
Paramedics confirmed Tracey Davies had passed away at the scene.
A forensic post-mortem examination subsequently concluded that her death was caused by manual strangulation.
Davies was transported to hospital under arrest and remained under medical care for a week before being formally booked into police custody.
During his formal interviews with detectives, Davies admitted to strangling his wife, though he failed to provide an explanation for his actions.
Detectives established that Davies had been working abroad in Abu Dhabi and had returned home to Cefn Cribwr suffering from acute mental health difficulties.
He admitted to officers that he had been experiencing overwhelming feelings of insecurity, jealousy, and unfounded paranoia that his wife intended to end their marriage.
At his trial, Davies sought to plead guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, arguing that a diagnosed depressive disorder and severe anxiety had substantially impaired his rational judgment at the moment of the killing.
The trial turned on extensive medical testimony, with the jury hearing direct evidence from three separate forensic psychiatrists who had conducted evaluations of Davies.
Following their deliberations, the jury rejected the proposition that Davies’s responsibility was diminished and returned a guilty verdict for the offence of murder.
Detective Chief Inspector Claire Lamerton commended Tracey Davies’s family and friends for their composure throughout the legal proceedings, describing Tracey as a selfless, loving, and deeply supportive woman who was devoted to her family.
In an emotional tribute, Tracey’s family condemned the brutal actions of Davies, highlighting that she had shown him nothing but affection and care up until her final moments, and stated that no sentence would ever compensate for the devastating loss they continue to endure.
The presiding judge remanded Davies in custody. He will be sentenced to mandatory life imprisonment, with the minimum term to be determined at a sentencing hearing scheduled for later this year.
