In 2022, the Offender Register reported that Matthew George, then 73, and John Muldoon, then 69, were convicted of the severe sexual and physical abuse of several young residents of Kerelaw Residential School in Stevenston, Ayrshire.
Between 1975 and 2004, the incidents occurred while both individuals were on school grounds.
Following a significant investigation conducted by Strathclyde Police between 2004 and 2006 into the physical and sexual abuse of residents by school staff, both men had already been sentenced to custodial terms.
A team of specialist officers was established to investigate all aspects of abuse alleged against former staff at the residential care establishment in response to the receipt of additional reports of severe sexual and physical abuse against residents at the school.
UPDATE: In early 2023, John Muldoon was jailed for 12 years, and Matthew George was sentenced to 16 years’ imprisonment.
