A court heard that Joseph Mafe, a Bermondsey sex offender and flasher who flaunted his “big” penis at women from his balcony in South London, claimed that it was “impossible” for a witness to hear it hitting his abdomen.
On Wednesday, March 6, Joseph Mafe, 53, of Empire Square South, Bermondsey, was sentenced to 10 months in jail at Inner London Crown Court after entering a guilty plea to two counts of exposure and violating a suspended sentence. The court harshly reprimanded Mafe for his repeated breaches.
The drug addict was given leniency at Snaresbrook Crown Court in 2022 for multiple instances of indecent exposure; however, last autumn, he broke the 23-week suspended sentence by relapsing and participating in a two-day “chemsex” binge that included the use of alcohol, crystal meth, and GBL—substances commonly linked to drug-fueled orgies.
The court heard that on September 16, Joseph Mafe paraded his member from his balcony, yelling “Hello” and “Oi” at any passing women until they had the bad luck to glance up. “He would put his hands behind his head and thrust forward till his penis brushed his stomach as they glanced up. Prosecutor Mark Gadsden stated, “She described a large penis.”
A witness threatened to dial 999 while Joseph Mafe yelled “yeah, yeah, yeah” and thrust his organ at women and children. She phoned the police after discovering Joseph Mafe naked and still waving his penis. On February 11 of this year, Joseph Mafe was committed to Inner London Crown Court for sentencing after being detained, charged, and entering a guilty plea before the magistrates’ court.
However, Joseph Mafe was arrested once more for the same actions on the day of the court. A witness witnessed him dancing in a dressing gown on his balcony while yelling, “Yeah, baby, it feels so good,” after hearing someone say, “Hey, hey.” “Yeah, yeah, it feels so good,” he exclaimed as he removed his gown to expose his penis. His penis was visible to me. The witness told police, “I could hear his penis slapping against the rest of his body.” Joseph Mafe yelled, “That’s impossible, that’s absolutely impossible,” when Mr Gadsden read this portion of her statement to the court. Judge Darren Reed dismissed his objections and permitted Mr Gadsden to proceed.
The court heard that Joseph Mafe exposed himself five more times after seeing the first naked dance. It was really upsetting to me and provided additional insight into the potential consequences of this incident. Many young females might pass this address on foot. The witness continued, “I’m afraid they could see it.
Defence attorney Danielle Buckett argued for another suspended sentence, claiming that her client’s drug usage and paranoid schizophrenia, together with the probation service’s lack of support, had made him suicidal. “He said that he was struggling at the time and that it was a scream for assistance… For several months, he had been abandoned, according to Ms Buckett.
Judge Reed was confronted directly by Joseph Mafe, who told him about suspected attempts at blackmail, devices placed in his house, and phone threats of death. In addition, he stated that he had not seen his drug support worker for eight months and had only seen the South London and Maudsley NHS mental health team four times in fifteen months.
Joseph Mafe’s assertions were met with little sympathy by Judge Reed, who informed him that the charges were “not caused by your previous mental health condition, but by recklessly taking drugs.”Judge Reed angrily said, “You told probation you had no memory of what you had done because you had been bingeing on alcohol, GBL, and crystal meth for two days.” “You describe how other people have failed you, yet you accept no accountability for your own transgressions. You have a history of these charges and are 53 years old, you are not a youthful man. It’s obvious to me that you don’t value or care about how your actions affect other people, and you’re not doing anything to change.”
In addition to a 26-week sentence for the other two charges, Joseph Mafe’s suspended sentence was activated to run for 14 consecutive weeks. He will serve a 40-week sentence in all. Mafe is also added to the 10-year list of sexual offenders.
