In 2026, James Burge, then aged 34, and Bethany Silverthorne, then aged 26, of Harehills, Leeds, West Yorkshire, were sentenced at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court after admitting to horrific animal neglect that resulted in the death of their pet dog.
The prosecution was brought following a joint inspection conducted in October 2025 by the RSPCA and West Yorkshire Police at a residential premises on Stanley Road.
The court heard that the couple, who referred to themselves as the “Beckhams of Yorkshire,” kept their animals in squalor.
Upon entering the property, an RSPCA animal rescue officer and a police officer discovered the body of a dog named Finn in the basement.
The room was described as a dumping ground covered in urine and decomposing faeces.
Finn was found deceased beside an empty bowl with protruding ribs and wasted muscle mass.
Veterinary evidence presented to the court concluded that the dog had been deprived of nutrition for between 48 and 57 hours prior to dying from neglect.
A second animal, a cat named Luna, was found severely underweight with inflamed scabbing and extensive fur loss.
Following two days of proper feeding in RSPCA custody, the cat gained 200g, confirming her state was the direct result of prolonged malnutrition and starvation.
At Kirklees Magistrates’ Court on 30 July 2026, Burge and Silverthorne pleaded guilty to:
- Two counts of failing to ensure animal welfare under the Animal Welfare Act 2006
The presiding magistrates sentenced both defendants to 26 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for a period of two years.
In addition to the suspended prison term, the court imposed an indefinite disqualification order prohibiting both Burge and Silverthorne from owning or keeping animals for life.
Burge was further ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid work in the community, and both individuals were instructed to pay £100 in prosecution costs alongside a £154 victim surcharge.
