Danny Hailes, aged 22, of Heather Vale Road, Hasland, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment after being convicted of a series of predatory offences against a child in her early teens and the rape and coercive control of an adult woman.
The case against Hailes first developed when safeguarding personnel at the teenage victim’s school identified significant welfare concerns regarding his interactions with the child and escalated the matter to Derbyshire Police.
Specialist officers initiated inquiries and arrested Hailes, uncovering a pattern of grooming and exploitation.
The investigation revealed that Hailes had subjected the young victim to persistent stalking that caused her to fear violence, engaged in sexual communications, and participated in illicit sexual activity with the child.
To maintain compliance and inflict emotional distress, Hailes also threatened to publish and circulate private sexual photographs of her.
Hailes was interviewed and released under investigation by police while digital forensics and file preparation continued.
However, during this exact period of bail and investigation, Hailes targeted a second victim—a woman in her twenties.
He subjected the woman to an escalating campaign of controlling and coercive behaviour, systematically undermining her independence before subjecting her to a violent rape.
The woman subsequently reported the abuse to the police, resulting in Hailes being rearrested.
Hailes was formally charged with offences against both victims, entering not guilty pleas across the board.
The case proceeded to a 13-day trial at the Crown Court in June, where both victims gave evidence.
Jurors rejected Hailes’s denials, delivering guilty verdicts on:
- Sexual activity with a child
- Sexual communication with a child
- Threatening to disclose private sexual photographs with intent to cause distress
- Stalking involving fear of violence
- Controlling and coercive behaviour
- Rape
The jury acquitted Hailes of separate charges alleging coercive control, rape, and stalking in relation to a third complainant.
On 14 September, the trial judge sentenced Hailes to an immediate custodial term of 10 years (120 months).
The judge also imposed lifetime restraining orders preventing Hailes from making any contact with his victims, granted a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), and directed that his details be placed on the Sex Offenders Register and the Children’s Barred List, permanently barring him from regulated activity involving children.
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing standard determinate custodial sentences of seven years or more for serious violent and sexual offences, statutory release at the halfway mark does not apply. Hailes is subject to the mandatory two-thirds custody provision, requiring him to serve a minimum of two-thirds (six years and eight months / 80 months) of his 10-year term in prison custody before becoming eligible to be considered for statutory release on licence to complete the remainder of the sentence under the supervision of the Probation Service in the community.
