In 2019, Sabbir Ibrahim, then aged 66, of Warrington Street, Little Harwood, Blackburn, was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment at Preston Crown Court after being convicted of sexual offences against an eight-year-old child.

The conviction followed an investigation by Lancashire Police after the young victim disclosed the abuse to her mother almost immediately after it took place.

Prosecutor John Wyn Williams told the court that the offences had shattered the eight-year-old child’s self-confidence, adding that she had been physically sick at the thought of having to relive her ordeal during the court proceedings.

Ibrahim, a father of two who had previously been regarded as a respected figure in the local community, denied all charges but was convicted following a jury trial.

During the hearing, it was revealed that Ibrahim had a previous conviction for sexual assault dating back to 2017.

In that incident, Ibrahim approached a 17-year-old girl from behind, grabbed her shoulders, cupped her breasts, and moved his hands towards her crotch before the teenager managed to flee and contact police.

Ibrahim was convicted by the jury of:

  • Assault by penetration
  • Sexual assault

Judge David Potter observed that Ibrahim had repeatedly demonstrated an unlawful sexual interest in young females, emphasising that child sexual abuse inflicts profound emotional distress that persists well into adulthood.

The judge handed down a custodial sentence of six years’ imprisonment, minus 95 days spent on an electronically monitored qualifying curfew.

In addition, Ibrahim was made subject to the notification requirements of the Sex Offenders Register for life and handed a ten-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).

Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing sexual offences, Ibrahim was required to serve two-thirds of his six-year sentence (minus the 95-day curfew deduction) in prison custody before becoming eligible for statutory release on licence, with the remainder of the term served under community supervision.
