Colin Brooks, aged 77, of Brixham, Devon, was sentenced to 28 months’ imprisonment at Guildford Crown Court on Monday, 17 May 2021, after pleading guilty to seven counts of indecent assault on a female child.

The court heard that the offences occurred over three years in the 1980s, when Brooks was serving as head teacher at The Grove School in Hindhead, Surrey (now known as The Royal School). The abuse began during a car journey when the victim was a teenager. Brooks placed the child’s hand near his groin, stopped the vehicle, unzipped his trousers, and forced her hand onto his genitals while driving, stating it was their secret.

Brooks subsequently enforced the victim’s silence by threatening that she would be removed from her family and placed into the care system if she disclosed the abuse to her mother. Over the following three years, Brooks repeatedly entered the victim’s bedroom under the pretence of saying goodnight, where he touched her breasts and forced her to perform oral sex and other acts.

Surrey Police initiated an investigation after the victim provided a recorded video interview on 14 November 2018. Officers arrested Brooks on 4 January 2019. Although he initially denied the allegations in two separate police interviews, calling them fabrications, he later entered guilty pleas to all charges.

Appearing before Guildford Crown Court, Brooks pleaded guilty to:

The presiding judge sentenced Brooks to a total of 28 months’ imprisonment.
