Christopher Binch, then aged 36, of Eltham Drive, Nottingham, was sentenced to eight years and one month’s imprisonment (97 months) at Nottingham Crown Court in 2023 after an international FBI investigation exposed him filming and distributing child sexual abuse material.
The prosecution arose after the Federal Bureau of Investigation placed an online chatroom on the Kik platform under active surveillance and intercepted video footage showing a young child being sexually abused.
The court heard Binch was the primary driver of the abuse, filming the acts and sharing them with other offenders across the internet to gain status in online paedophile networks.
Surveillance logs gathered by federal agents documented Binch discussing the use of sleeping pills to drug children prior to sexually abusing them.
When police executed a warrant at his home, Binch showed officers a quantity of cocaine stored in a microwave and made initial admissions that the abuse had been taking place for two years.
A comprehensive digital forensic examination of Binch’s mobile devices recovered:
- 128 Category A indecent images of children
- 117 Category B indecent images of children
- 102 Category C indecent images of children
- 35 extreme pornographic images
The court noted that certain recordings depicted children aged as young as two and three years old being subjected to rape.
Binch pleaded guilty to:
- Making indecent images of children
- Distributing indecent images of children
- Possession of cocaine
Sentencing Binch, Judge Mark Watson firmly rejected arguments attributing the offending to drug use or lockdown isolation, stating the offences were driven entirely by his own sexual interest in children.
The judge handed down a custodial sentence of eight years and one month’s imprisonment, placed Binch on the Sex Offenders Register for life, and imposed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing sexual offences, Binch was required to serve two-thirds (64.6 months / 5 years and 4 months) of his 97-month sentence in prison custody before becoming eligible for statutory release on licence, with the remaining 32.4 months served under community supervision.
