Chiziem Omisa, then aged 25, of Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, was sentenced to four years and four months in prison at St Albans Crown Court on Thursday, June 27, 2024, after pleading guilty to sexual assault by penetration, two counts of stalking, and perverting the course of justice.
The court heard that in May 2019, Omisa tracked down a female victim on Instagram, sending her flirtatious communications before meeting her at a student accommodation facility in Nottingham. Omisa subjected the woman to a sexual assault by penetration, ignoring her explicit and repeated requests for him to cease his actions. Following the assault, Omisa attempted to suppress any law enforcement involvement by coercively warning the victim that reporting the incident would result in her expulsion from her university.
Although the victim initially refrained from contacting law enforcement out of distress and fear, Nottinghamshire Police officers identified her after seizing and analyzing Omisa’s mobile device during an unrelated enquiry. Upon locating the victim, detectives obtained her statement detailing the incident. When interviewed by police, Omisa denied any criminal conduct; however, investigators confronted him with digital forensic evidence from his phone, specifically WhatsApp messages sent on the day of the attack in which he explicitly boasted to a friend about committing the assault.
Further police investigations revealed that while released on bail for the Nottingham assault, Omisa continued a systematic pattern of harassment, using false aliases to stalk two additional young women both online and in person, alongside committing acts aimed at perverting the course of justice.
Police Staff Investigator Kerry Humphreys highlighted Omisa’s persistent pattern of harassing women and refusing to accept rejection, noting that digital evidence and victim testimony were critical in securing his conviction.
On June 27, 2024, the presiding judge sentenced Omisa to a total custodial term of four years and four months’ imprisonment. The court also issued restraining orders prohibiting Omisa from contacting any of his victims, alongside a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). Under the terms of the SHPO, upon release, Omisa must register all social media accounts with law enforcement, surrender all electronic devices for police inspection upon demand, and refrain from sending unsolicited contact requests to women on social media platforms.
