In 2024, Carl McCracken, a 51-year-old man from South Cumbria, was handed a suspended prison sentence after police uncovered child abuse images and multiple breaches of a court order.
Carl McCracken, of Bela Avenue, Milnthorpe, appeared at Carlisle Crown Court after pleading guilty to five counts of breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), three counts of downloading indecent images of children, and two counts of failing to comply with sex offender notification requirements. The court heard that law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at his home address, seizing digital devices that revealed 17 child abuse images, including four Category A, five Category B, and eight Category C images. McCracken further breached his existing order by deleting his internet history, utilising cloud storage, and accessing prohibited applications, including Snapchat and TikTok.
Defending barrister Gerard Rogerson highlighted that McCracken had already begun engaging with the Probation Service under a previous suspended sentence before the additional forensic evidence resulted in the new prosecution. Acknowledging that McCracken demonstrated a realistic prospect of rehabilitation and noting a procedural delay in the processing of police evidence, Judge Nicholas Barker sentenced McCracken to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years.
In addition to his suspended prison sentence, McCracken was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years.
He was also made subject to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) to ensure strict ongoing monitoring of his digital devices, internet access, and social media usage following his court appearance.
