Callum Liddle, aged 38, of no fixed abode and of the Peterborough area, was sentenced to two years and seven months in prison at Peterborough Crown Court on 7 August 2026 after pleading guilty to intentional suffocation, assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH), and assault by beating.

The court heard that on 19 July last year, Liddle flew into a rage after his partner received a text message. When the victim attempted to rise from a chair, Liddle blocked the doorway before shoving her forcefully with both hands. Liddle then grabbed the victim by her hair, threw her into bookshelves, and knocked her to the floor, where he kicked her in the back three times.

Liddle proceeded to climb on top of the victim, pinning her to the ground with his knees on her chest. While using one hand to cover her mouth and nose to restrict her breathing, he used his other hand to pour cider across her face, causing liquid to enter her eyes and leaving her fighting for air. The victim managed to defend herself by striking Liddle with an object, enabling her to flee the address and contact law enforcement.

An investigation carried out by Cambridgeshire Police secured evidence of the violent assault. In addition to the primary incident, Liddle was charged in relation to a separate assault by beating committed against a second victim in May of the previous year. Additional charges of threats to kill, threats to damage property, and intentional strangulation were ordered to lie on file by the court.

Detective Constable Kate Jacklin highlighted the prolonged and dangerous nature of the assault, noting that Liddle showed total disregard for the victim’s life and safety.

On 7 August 2026, the presiding judge sentenced Liddle to a total term of two years and seven months’ imprisonment. The court also issued a ten-year restraining order against Liddle to safeguard the primary victim.
