In 2021, Brian O’Neil, a then 66-year-old pensioner from Coundon, was handed a 21-year prison sentence following an investigation into decades of severe child sexual abuse and voyeurism.
Brian O’Neil, formerly of Wharton Street, Coundon, was sentenced at Durham Crown Court to an extended determinate sentence of 21 years’ imprisonment with a five-year extended licence period. O’Neil pleaded guilty to rape, voyeurism, and 20 other sexual charges, and was subsequently found guilty by a jury of 10 further counts. The court heard that O’Neil carried out a sustained pattern of physical abuse and voyeurism against young girls over a period spanning three decades, frequently recording his illegal activities.
Impact statements detailed the profound, long-term psychological trauma inflicted on his victims. Judge Ray Singh formally declared O’Neil a dangerous offender, noting his persistent sexual interest in children and the ongoing threat he posed to the public. Under the terms of his extended sentence, O’Neil was ordered to serve at least 14 years in custody before becoming eligible for parole consideration.
In addition to his 21-year extended prison sentence, O’Neil was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
He was also made subject to mandatory post-release licence supervision and ongoing public protection monitoring to manage public safety risks.
