In 2026, the Offender Register reported that Brian Darby, a former police officer and BBC employee who once considered becoming a serial murderer, had been incarcerated once more for posting online fantasies about raping and murdering women and girls.
In 2002, Brian Darby, 80, was sentenced to life imprisonment for attempted murder after infiltrating a woman’s residence in west London and attempting to strangle her with a wire.
In 2017, he was discovered to have created indecent images of children and written online about the acts of suffocating, smothering, and drowning women since his release on licence.
Darby, a resident of Enfield in northern London, has previously acknowledged a series of accusations that pertain to these offences.
He was sentenced to four years in prison and an additional two years on licence at Wood Green Crown Court on Friday.
Darby, who served as a health and safety officer for the BBC during the 1980s, commenced viewing indecent images of children online almost immediately after his release, according to the court.
The judge identified Darby’s “entrenched interest in violent sexual material involving children and adults” and his pattern of offending as factors in evaluating him as a dangerous offender.
The court was informed that Darby was terminated from his position as a police officer at Leicestershire Police in the 1970s after being found guilty of indecently assaulting boys.
In 2001, he confessed to attempted murder and was found guilty of conspiracy to murder in the presence of his girlfriend, Jeanette White, during the trial.
The Old Bailey was informed that White was “under the spell” of Darby as they exchanged approximately 450 pages of letters regarding cannibalism, necrophilia, rape, and serial killing.
The couple’s fantasies had become reality by 2000, as they conspired to murder a woman and her children in their Westminster home. Darby responded to advertisements from women seeking a room to rent to stalk them.
Darby, who was posing as a BBC researcher, visited the residence of a 45-year-old mother in Ealing, west London, and narrowly evaded death.
Darby’s 2002 sentencing hearing was informed that, with the intention of raping and killing her, he hung a wire noose around her neck. However, she was able to flee into the street.
He entered a guilty plea to nine obscene communications offences, three counts of creating indecent photographs of a child, and two counts of distributing indecent photographs of a child.
