Babatunde Odutola, aged 36, of no fixed address, has been sentenced to 44 weeks’ immediate imprisonment at Manchester Magistrates’ Court after exposing himself and masturbating on a train while targeting a female passenger.

The incident occurred at around 7:00 pm on Friday, 11 September, aboard a passenger service travelling through Cheshire towards Manchester Piccadilly station.

The prosecution detailed that Odutola, a convicted sex offender originally from Nigeria, approached a female passenger and subjected her to prolonged, intimidating staring.

When the victim made it clear she did not wish to interact, Odutola turned aggressive.

Sitting in a wheelchair, Odutola deliberately exposed his genitals and began masturbating in plain view.

While engaging in the sexual act, he kept his gaze fixed on the victim and verbally commanded her to “come over.”

Observing the victim’s distress, another commuter intervened and assisted the woman in leaving the carriage safely.

Subsequent examinations of onboard CCTV footage revealed that Odutola continued masturbating openly as other members of the public walked past him through the carriage aisle.

Train crew alerted the British Transport Police, who deployed officers to intercept the arrival of the service at Manchester Piccadilly.

Officers boarded the train and detained Odutola on the spot.

During police interviews, Odutola displayed no remorse and denied the conduct.

However, confronted with forensic review of CCTV recordings and corroborated witness testimony, he entered guilty pleas on Monday, 14 September, to:

  • Outraging public decency
  • Breach of a suspended sentence order

Magistrates determined that the severity of the violation, combined with the breach of a court order, warranted immediate imprisonment, handing Odutola a total custodial sentence of 44 weeks.

Release Calculation: Under UK determinate sentencing legislation governing sentences of this length, statutory release applies at the halfway mark. Odutola will serve one-half (22 weeks) of the 44-week term in prison custody before being released on licence to serve the remaining period under the supervision of the Probation Service.
