Abdul Omer, aged 31, of St Fabians Drive, Chelmsford, Essex, has been sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment at Basildon Crown Court on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, after admitting to the rape of a woman in Southend.
The attack took place on the evening of 23 August 2025 on Great Eastern Avenue in Southend. The court heard that the victim, a woman in her 50s, was approached in the street by Omer, an individual she did not know. During the incident, the attacker informed the woman that his name was ‘Akky’ before carrying out a serious sexual assault and raping her.
Following the report, detectives from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate launched an investigation to establish the identity of the suspect. Through extensive enquiries with local partner agencies and forensic examination of CCTV footage throughout the Southend area, detectives identified ‘Akky’ as Abdul Omer.
Investigators traced Omer’s residence to an address in Chelmsford. Essex Police alerted local neighbourhood policing teams and shared his description with local authority partners. On the following day, monitoring staff from the Chelmsford City Council CCTV control room spotted Omer, allowing officers to deploy rapidly and arrest him.
Omer was charged with rape and subsequently entered a guilty plea at Basildon Crown Court on 5 January 2026.
At his sentencing hearing on 26 August 2026, Omer was convicted of:

The presiding judge sentenced Omer to an immediate custodial sentence of 12 years’ imprisonment.
