In 2026, Joseph Haffenden, then aged 32, of High Street, Lindfield, West Sussex, was sentenced to 51 months’ imprisonment at Lewes Crown Court after pleading guilty to a series of sexual assaults against two children.
The conviction followed an investigation by Sussex Police that began on 12 February 2026, after allegations were raised concerning the abuse of two nine-year-old boys.
The court heard that the offences took place between January and February 2026.
Haffenden, who was employed as a primary school teacher, manipulated the young victims into participating by presenting the abuse as an innocent “game.”
Both boys provided detailed, consistent accounts explaining how Haffenden subjected them to unwanted contact beneath their clothing, using his hands, a feather, and an electric toothbrush, while restraining them.
The children disclosed the conduct to adults, who promptly contacted law enforcement.
Sussex Police arrested Haffenden, and he was immediately suspended from his educational role and subsequently dismissed.
Specialist detectives executed a search warrant at Haffenden’s residential address, recovering items that directly corroborated the victims’ disclosures and confirmed an active sexual interest in children.
At Lewes Crown Court on Monday, 20 July 2026, Haffenden entered guilty pleas to:
- Six counts of sexual assault by touching
- Six counts of false imprisonment
Detective Sergeant Ellen Jones from Sussex Police stated that Haffenden’s disturbing actions represented an alarming betrayal of his position of trust as a primary school teacher, praising the courage of the young boys for reporting the offences and enabling police to remove him from the community.
On Thursday, 3 September 2026, the presiding judge handed down a custodial sentence of 51 months’ imprisonment (four years and three months).
Release Calculation: Under UK sentencing legislation governing serious sexual offences carrying determinate custodial terms, Haffenden is required to serve two-thirds (34 months / 2 years and 10 months) of his 51-month term in prison custody before becoming eligible for statutory release on licence. His earliest release eligibility date falls in July 2029, whereupon he will remain subject to licence conditions, probation supervision, and statutory notification requirements for the remaining 17 months of his sentence until December 2030.
